NIKE Women's Marathon: Details

Hellooo there!  Christie Myer, my contact person for the NIKE Women’s Marathon, emailed me with our volunteer details.  We will be doing the 7 AM to 1 PM shift at Golden Gate Park.  Because the hours are quite long, you will receive two volunteer credits for attending this event.  Your duties are extremely simple!  Groups of two or three will each be assigned an intersection in Golden Gate Park.  You job is to stand there, enjoy the freebies from the awesome sponsors (Gatorade, LUNA bar, and Jamba Juice) while wearing your FREE t-shirt, and point the marathon runners in the right direction.  That’s all you have to do!  The NIKE marathon has given out uber fantabulous goodies in the past – gift cards (up to $50), NIKE t-shirts, free Power Bars (probably LUNA bars this year – if you haven’t tried them, they ROCK.  They sell for over $1 EACH in stores!), and tons of free Jamba Juice certificates.  Awesome, no?  If the enticing freebies aren’t enough to persuade you, I have something else that surely will.

NIKE Marathon will donate $400 to our club if we get over 30 volunteers.

Our club can do SO much with that money!  (We have nothing right now.)  We’ll save a majority of the money for donations, but you guys will definitely reap some benefits!  Think better food at meetings, more parties, and super-duper prizes!  If we get the grant money from the NIKE Marathon, we will have an “award ceremony” at the end of the semester to present members who volunteered at the most events with wonderful prizes (think gift cards, movie tickets, etc.).

Besides all the freebies, you will be supporting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, whose work saves many lives each year.  There are many young children who either are born with or develop Leukemia (blood cancer) at a young age.  Their survival rates are significantly higher than those of adults, but without money or new research, treatment would not be possible.  The NIKE Marathon raises A LOT of money for the LLS.  Volunteers are crucial to the success of the event, so please volunteer.  You will surely make a difference in many people’s lives!

Sign-ups will begin at our next meeting, Tuesday, October 4th at 3:45 in room 233.  We will also be distributing the Trick or Treat for UNICEF collection boxes then.

PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD.  BRING ALL YOUR FRIENDS.

Also, start thinking about who you want to work with at your intersection.  If you do not form your own group, I will randomly pair you up.

If you’re a little wary about the lack of organization at Walk for Hope (I’m really sorry about that!), I promise we will be more “together” at the NIKE marathon.  This is an extremely large-scale event that has national recognition (people from all over the United States come to San Francisco just to be in the Marathon!), so don’t worry!

Please contact me with any questions or comments.  If you would like to sign-up now or any reason (you can’t make it to the meeting, you’re too excited, etc.), please comment with your name/reg/email.  I will get back to everyone ASAP.

Once again, thank you all for your support.  I hope everyone will volunteer at the marathon.  You’ll definitely have a great time!
